Mungo's Hi-Fi - Sound System Champions

2008 Rockers Revolt - Review by Gabe

Rockers Revolt continues to fire sheer gun smoke with their latest release from Scotland's number one sound system Mungo's Hi-Fi. From Ska and Reggae, to Rub A Dub, Dancehall and more Sound System Champions will blow your mind! This thing is an onslaught of heavyweight riddims alongside world class singers and MCs from start to finish.

Right from the start, singer Marina P from Paris demands your attention. Her warm sultry voice glides smoothly over a blazing hot ska beat on Divorce A L'Italienn.

In with the roots comes Kenny Knots on
Don't Let Them Break Your Heart. After just these two tunes, you know these guys are the real deal with such a seamless transition from one style to another. Veteran DJ Ranking Joe puts down a scorching vocal on How You Bad So? and the riddim rolls along just as tough. They give you some time to cool out and groove with Under Arrest and Old Time Dance, two of my personal favorites. Then they bring back the pressure with a lyrical attack from London's own Tippa Irie on Ruff Mi Tuff.

The musical onslaught continues with a total of 12 tracks and closes out with Did You Really Know. Which in my opinion is one of the stronger tunes from the only other female vocalist
Soom T over a modernized rocksteady beat that is really the foundation of their sound - fresh and forward. They really know how to blend the right elements from differing styles just right. Follow the links to some the vocalists listed here and check out their background. Then compare that to the Jamaican influenced riddims on Sound System Champions and you'll see why Mungo's Hi-Fi are fast becoming the most in-demand sound system in Europe.
